Head Injuries: Is It a Concussion?

This week at the annual American Academy of Pediatrics national conference, there was an important session on the treatment of concussions. Since most parents still arrive in the Emergency Department terrified to allow their child to sleep and demanding a CT scan, I thought this article was worth sharing. After reading it, I encourage you to pass on the information to your patients, your students, and the parents you support. Head injuries are a leading cause of Emergency Department visits. For younger children, it is often a fall onto a hard surface. For older children, sports tend to be the main cause. Be sure to strongly encourage helmets for any activity involving wheels (bicycles, skateboards, skates, and scooters)- and set a good example by always wearing a helmet yourself. Actions always speak louder than words!
